Debating Priestly Celibacy in the Catholic Church

Earlier this Summer, Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal published an article about debate within the Roman Catholic Church about priestly celibacy that discussed its history, its basis and possibly amending the practice in very particular case, creating in effect a new class of priest who’s members would be addressed as “Elders” rather than “Father.” My favorite quote from the piece is: “risks reducing the priest to a kind of magician who speaks certain incantations,” which comes from a theologian named George Weigel objecting to separating the sacramental functions of the priesthood from its administrative functioning. I like the ring of that! Reminds me of what the missus said she was taught about Catholics “Idol worshipping pagans.” Sign me up!
