Big Star’s Place In The Stars

Full disclosure: Alex Chilton and his erstwhile band Big Star have been an obsession of mine for a line time. You don’t wanna know the amount of time and money and energy and thought I’ve devoted to collecting artifacts, recordings, ephemera and so on. Notwithstanding… as lip-servicey as the piece from the wonderful DangerousMinds.net might make his interest in astrology seem on the surface — Chilton was no dope, he didn’t really waste time on things unimportant or meaningless to him and his astrological concerns do seem to be of substance if you read closely. At the same time, he DID like to have his fun and the offhand references to astrology that crop up in his work could well have been a knowing wink for those who could see past the cheekiness. Or not.
