A movie released June 1 seems to be Bollywood’s answer to Sex and the City. “Unlike most Bollywood buddy-comedy films, which centre on the lives of male characters, Veere Di Wedding features four rich female friends who drink, smoke cannabis, curse their partners and families, and discuss the challenges of marriage and sexuality,” says Al Jazeera, noting that the film has already made around $12 million.
While the story centers around a wedding, a conventional Bollywood conceit, the main characters are all ambivalent about marriage. Banned in Pakistan for its frank portrayal of sexuality, Veere Di Wedding includes a scene in which a married character, Sakshi Soni (played by Swara Bhaskar), masturbates. Bhaskar tweeted: “In a culture that largely silences or ignores or shames female sexuality showing a girl gratifying herself in a film in a non-judgemental way is empowering.”
Veere Di Wedding is showing in cinemas around the world.
