BDSM includes both sexual and non-sexual motivations

The Science of BDSM is an academic research team out of Northern Illinois University doing scholarly work on the  functioning and application of BDSM. The team’s members include Kathryn Klement, Ellen Lee, and Brad Sagarin who have published numerous papers and given frequent presentations based on their research.

Here’s one of their papers. It begins:

“BDSM (Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, Sadism & Masochism) is often defined solely as kinky sex. BDSM practitioners recognize, however, that BDSM can encompass more than just sexuality. In SM 101, for example, Jay  of BDSM includes both sexual and non-sexual motivations”
