Having not passed through pubescence as female-bodied person my knowledge of slumber parties comes primarily from their depictions in films, TV shows and what I’d learned in casual conversations. I got some serious schooling in the topic via a feature in the Spring issue of Bust magazine, “The History and Science of Your Favorite Slumber Party Games” which focused on those of an occult tenor. Most surprising was a scrying rite called Bloody Mary, in which a spectre is summoned into a mirror to reveal the querent’s future. There are a number of historical figures suggested as the Mary in question including Mary Worth who’d lure runaway slaves into her care and then turn them in to authorities to collect the bounty on their heads.
