Human beings often operate with the silly idea that in the animal kingdom, sex is only for reproductive purposes. The truth is, that’s simply not the case. Creatures around the world have sex for myriad reasons, with procreation being only one among many. It’s certainly not just in different-sex pairings, either. Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity, a 1999 work by Canadian biologist, linguist, and author Bruce Bagemihl, documents homosexuality in more than 450 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and other animals.

It’s not surprising, then, that we see such evidence in our zoological parks. We’ve all heard about various gay penguin couples, like Roy and Silo at the New York Central Park Zoo. Just last week, Metro Weekly reported that “A pair of mischievous gorillas were seemingly caught in the throes of passion at a zoo in the Netherlands.” Wikipedia notes that male bonnet macaques masturbate each other, female kob perform oral sex on each other, and groups of male grey whales roll in the ocean “rubbing their bellies against each other so that their genitals are touching.”
Aleister Crowley himself, in his Commentary to the Book of the Law, said “The Beast 666 ordains by His authority that every man, and every woman, and every intermediately-sexed individual, shall be absolutely free to interpret and communicate Self by means of any sexual practices soever, whether direct or indirect, rational or symbolic, physiologically, legally, ethically, or religiously approved or no, provided only that all parties to any act are fully aware of all implications and responsibilities thereof, and heartily agree thereto.” See also Liber Oz, which states “Man has the right to love as he will.”
