On June 14, 1825, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, the French-born American architect who laid out Washington, DC, died at age 70. L’Enfant is said to have been a Freemason and a friend of George Washington. When Congress decided to build a federal capital on the Potomac River, President George Washington hired L’Enfant in 1791 to prepare the city’s plan.
After a series of disputes about the capital city’s plan, including removing the home of a influential DC resident to build an avenue, Washington fired L’Enfant in 1792. Although most of his plan was used, L’Enfant died penniless. American National Biography Online: L’Enfant, Pierre Charles.
