Tomorrow, February 22, is the Feast of Dame Doctor Anna Mary Bonus Kingsford. Born Anna Mary Bonus 16 September 1846 in Maryland Point, Stratford, she was one of the first English women to earn a degree in medicine. An animal rights activist and vegetarian, she completed her studies without experimenting on any animals; she may or may not have cursed at least one vivisectionist to his death. She also encouraged the involvement of both women and men in such esoteric organizations as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Ordo Templi Orientis.
According to Paradoxos Alpha’s essay nominating Kingsford to the Order of the Eagle:
Crowley particularly pointed to Kingsford’s writings as providing an example of Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. The text in question was “The Vision of Adonai” included in her book Clothed with the Sun. That book was assembled by Maitland from Kingsford’s writings that were “recieved” through mystic inspiration and “not to be changed in so much as a single word.” It stands as an obvious predecessor to and influence upon the Holy Books of Thelema in both form and content.
In honor of Dame Anna Kingsford, here is a recipe for a delicious vegan lunch.
