One of the more famed attractions of Philadlephia, PA – among those of a, ahem, “certain disposition” is the Mutter Museum. This was established as a medical research facilty WAY back in the day and thus if filled with skulls boasting axe, bullet and blunt force trauma wounds, foetuses in jars, the skeleton of an exceptionally tall person — displayed next to that of an exceptionally short person…and the like. This was a state of the art facility in the 19th century and after it slowly slipped into obsolescence it enjoyed a renaissance as one of the major macabre curiosities in the U.S. and then was reborn again as a very accessible way for youngsters to learn to appreciate the mysteries of the human body. And still has great charm to lovers of the thanaotic mysteries. The latter can now proudly exhibit their allegiance to this Philly institution with a stylish new hoodie.
But first – a little more about the Mutter:
“America’s finest museum of medical history, the Mütter Museum displays its beautifully preserved collections of anatomical specimens, models, and medical instruments in a 19th-century “cabinet museum” setting. The museum helps the public understand the mysteries and beauty of the human body and to appreciate the history of diagnosis and treatment of disease.
“Today, the Museum enjoys a steadily rising reputation with annual attendance exceeding 130,000 visitors. Enjoying international popularity, the Museum has been featured on countless TV programs and specials and is the subject of two best-selling books.
“The Museum Education program is geared toward middle school and high school students of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, and partners with area schools to expose students to the wide variety of careers in health care and biosciences, as well as to introduce them to the history and culture of medicine.
