Trenton, NJ native Nona Hendryx, founder member of R&B powerhouse Labelle, will be presenting a tribute to Jazz legend and Afrofuturist icon Sun Ra; the survivors of his Arkestra still maintain the group house he established in Philadelphia during his lifetime. The event’s site says:
“Sun Ra was a visionary artist and composer who infused his ecstatic performances with costumes and mythology that both looked back to ancient Egypt and forward to science fiction. Nona Hendryx has created a multisensory tribute to Sun Ra with music direction by Craig Harris, choreography by Francesca Harper, costume/ set design by Virgil Ortiz and invocations by Carl Hancock Rux, conceived specifically for the Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing.”
