Imagine waiting your entire life for a cosmic event that most people never witness. Between 1978 and 1986, something extraordinary was happening in Marjorie Cameron’s creative world—and it wasn’t just artistic inspiration striking.

Far beyond the visible planets, Pluto was creeping through her 12th House with the patience of geological time itself. This distant world takes 248 years to orbit our sun, meaning it crawls through only 3-6 astrological houses in a human lifetime. Most of us get maybe half a dozen Pluto transits, if we’re lucky.
Cameron won the cosmic lottery.
She must have been born at precisely the right moment—with Pluto positioned in her later houses—to live long enough to experience this once-in-a-lifetime transit through her 12th House. Had she arrived when Pluto was camping out in her 1st, 2nd, or 3rd house? She’d have been long gone before it ever reached the mystical 12th.
But the universe had other plans. As Pluto—that relentless force of transformation and hidden truths—moved through the house governing our subconscious depths and karmic memories, Cameron’s most profound drawings emerged. Eight years of creation during astronomy’s slowest, most powerful transit.
Pure coincidence? In the language of the stars, there’s no such thing.

Art That Casts Spells
Nicole Klagsbrun—who gave Cameron her first New York solo show back in 2007—has assembled something extraordinary. These aren’t just drawings; they’re visual incantations. Cameron’s abstract works seem to pulse with otherworldly energy, while her high-contrast figures feel like they might step off the wall and into your dreams.
Every piece blurs the line between art and ritual, between the conscious and the cosmic. Walking through this exhibition feels less like viewing art and more like being initiated into secret knowledge.
The Witch Who Drew Lightning
Cameron wasn’t your typical artist. Navy cartographer turned California mystic, she lived at the electric intersection of rocket science and black magic. Married to Jack Parsons (yes, the rocket scientist who also happened to practice occultism), she later became entangled with Burt Shonberg, the godfather of psychedelic art. Her life reads like a fever dream scripted by Hollywood.
But here’s what makes her unforgettable: Cameron starred in Kenneth Anger’s legendary Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome in 1954, mentored underground legends like Wallace Berman and George Herms, and somehow managed to channel pure mystical energy onto paper.
Go Deeper Down the Rabbit Hole
Ready to fall completely under Cameron’s spell? Spencer Kansa’s biography Wormwood Star is your portal into her extraordinary world. Fair warning: once you enter Cameron’s universe, there’s no going back to ordinary art.

The MONA LISA of esoteric art, THE QUEEN Majorie Cameron’s self-portrait, The Black Egg, was placed at the center of an altar during Cameron’s 1995 memorial service. It was the best exhibition I’ve seen in months, by orders of magnitude.
