The often lurid UK tabloid, the Daily Mail, ran a report about a dentist who visited his parents’ home, and on inspecting the newly laid travertine tiles, noted a hominin jawbone embedded in it. An excerpt of the story states:
‘While fossils are often found in travertine, hominin fossils are much less common,’ archaeologist Kristina Killgrove told DailyMail.com. ‘This one is definitely a hominin’s lower jaw bone, cut transversely somewhere through the middle.’
There is no indication in the story as to whether the tile is being removed and donated to a museum or archaeological research facility or staying in place.
