Gynecologists need more training

A woman looks annoyed.

When it comes to menopausal women and gay women, gynecologists aren’t getting the education they need.

Most gynecologists lack education and training on menopause, says Pamela Dee Gaudry, MD, a Savannah, Georgia-based gynecologist in an interview with Prevention. Instead, obstetrics and gynecology focus on a woman’s reproductive years. Sex needn’t end with menopause, but ill-informed medical practitioners can worsen problems instead of solving them.

Further, many Ob/Gyns make assumptions about lesbian sexuality that just don’t make any sense. In a recent Twitter conversation reported by Cosmopolitan, a woman noted her doctor “…asking me what so did in bed and ‘who was the man’. Really.” Other women reported being told that same sex encounters “didn’t count.” Again, this sort of bad information can be discouraging and make it difficult for women to get adequate health care.

It is clear that we need to school our healthcare professionals more fully so that all women can get the medical attention they need.
