Anyone who’s spent even a little time involved in the Pagan traditions of Ireland has come across accounts of the Sheela-na-gig, stylized depictions of women holding exaggerated labial lips apart. Recent theories suggest that this figure could represent the wife of St. Patrick! And as Irish folk beliefs and Catholicism have interbred in so many other, uh, fascinating ways, with a number of Catholic saints being adapted pretty much wholesale from Irish religious mythology, so… it could be. Recently a map has been produced of all known Sheela-na-gigs.
