Classical Greek KAOS Reigns on Netflix

KAOS is an eight episode series streaming on Netflix that depicts a world where the Gods and Goddesses of Classical Greece are still on the scene and have been steadily updating their lifestyles in step with mankind’s. The series appears to be set in the 1980’s in Crete and all the characters, excepting Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum) speaks with a British accent (which I suppose is the default mode to indicate a Classical language; I guess it makes sense if you grew up on Masterpiece Theater). It’s a dark comedy.

I am enjoying this because the show’s creators are depicting many characters from Greek cosmology and remaining faithful to the characteristics the Deities exhibit in Classic Greek literature – very logically updated to modern circumstances. I found the depiction of the Underworld especially fascinating, with departed souls crossing the Styx on a steamer, all crowded together on the main deck, disembarking and going through a typical immigration checkpoint before being transported to the Lethe to cross and be reincarnated — all this being depicted in shades of grey, drab white and soft black.
