Anniversary of the Passing of Ouarda

Today is the anniversary of the passing of the first wife of the Prophet of the Lovely Star, Rose Edith Kelly, whose magical name was Ouarda. She was instrumental in Crowley reception of Liber AL vel Legis while the couple were on their honeymoon in Cairo. FindAGrave has this brief biogaphical sketch.

Rose Edith Kelly (23 July 1874 – 11 Feb. 1932) married noted author, magician and occultist Aleister Crowley in 1903. In 1904, she aided him in the Cairo Working that led to the reception of The Book of the Law, on which Crowley based much of his philosophy and religion, Thelema.

Rose had two children with Crowley: Nuit Ma Ahathoor Hecate Sappho Jezebel Lilith (July 1904 –1906) and Lola Zaza (1907 – 1990). Rose and Aleister divorced in 1909.

In 1911, Crowley had her committed to an asylum for alcohol dementia.

After her release she married Dr. Joseph Andrew Gormley in October 1912, a Roman Catholic, but her alcoholism returned. Dr. Gormley died 1 March 1925 at age 75. Kelly died on 11 February 1932 in Middlesex
