David Tibet, long time primum mobile of the musical ensemble Current 93 and current member of the Cabinet of Ordo Templi Orientis has just published a new paper on performer Shirley Collins. Though not widely known in the U.S., she was vastly influential on the folk revival scene in the U.K. and inspiring acts like the Incredible String Band (who appeared on her “The Power of the True Love Knot” album), and Fairport Convention. One of her most important offerings was “Folk Roots, New Routes,” a collaboration with jazz guitar wizard Davy Graham which basically laid the blue print for the mix of sophisticated chordings and folk repertoire that would make Pentangle stars. She would late provide inspiration to the “psych folk” scene in the middle of the last decade. But in the end, the original is still the greatest!
