NPR.org reports an attempt by students at San Diego University to establish a fraternity and sorority that recognize Buddhist values. They’d be named Delta Beta Tau and Delta Beta Theta respectively. As a young man Aleister Crowley studied Buddhism with Allan Bennett, travelling to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) for further study after Bennett entered a monastery. For years afterwards, he self-identified as Buddhist and a number of Thelemic concepts would appear influenced by Buddhist precedents i.e. freedom from lust of result perhaps emerging from the Second and Third Nobel Truths. This then is recontextualized by these students as, “You want things: You want that boy to like you back, you want that new purse. But if you stop expecting so much out of everything, you’re just so much happier.”
Very cool. Hopefully the next step is setting up Thelemic frats and sororities!
