As we close in on Samhain, many of us are thinking about mortality a little more than usual. Even if we don’t fear celebrating our own Greater Feasts, the loss we experience we a loved one passes away and is no longer in our midst is typically a profound and sad experience. Humans practice a number of funerary rituals and have going back 10’s of 1000’s of years, perhaps mainly for the benefit of the survivors than for the dead. But apparently we’re not alone and this piece looks at the funereal behaviors of our fellow animals on this planet.
