Why are curators increasingly looking back to historical exhibitions?

Museums and galleries in the US and Europe are redoing, restaging, revisiting and reimagining historical shows at a remarkable rate. The latest example of this trend is the homage at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) to “Cybernetic Serendipity” (until 30 November), a landmark show on computer art that took place at the London institution in 1968. Using documents, photographs and press clippings, the ICA is revisiting the blockbuster exhibition, which was organised by Jasia Reichardt, then the associate director of the institute, to highlight its role in the blurring of the boundaries between art and technology.
