The UK’s Daily Mail recently ran a piece which documents a text book case of bad archaeology – in this case in service of “proving” accounts in the New Testament. In this case, a University of Nebraska professor is claiming to have proved that a particular excavation in Israel is the site of the town of Bethsaida, home to the apostles Peter, Andrew and Philip and where Jesus “fed the 5000.” It’d seem that his proof is citing entirely circumstantial evidence, details in Josephus’ “Jewish Antiquities” that he then interprets as liberally as Crowley doing a Qabalistic calculation!
There’s no new evidence being introduced, no contemporary writing from that period, no artifacts – musta been a slow news day for the Daily Mail to have bothered putting this story togethr and posting!
