Netflix describes the series thus: “Insecure Otis has all the answers when it comes to sex advice, thanks to his therapist mom. So rebel Maeve proposes a school sex-therapy clinic.” Starring Asa Butterfield as Otis, Gillian Anderson as his mother Jean, Emma Mackey as Maeve, and Ncuti Gatwa as Otis’ flamboyant best friend, Sex Education is funny, awkward, sweet, and even educational. If only real life offered such learning opportunities!
Refinery 28 reports: “The coming-of-age drama starring Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield features a British cast, is set in a British school, and was filmed in Penarth, South Wales, yet it feels incredibly American. The show also never says what year it is or where exactly the characters are located. According to series creator Laurie Nunn, this was done deliberately in an effort to make the story universal.”
