Today, May 9, is the Feast of Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese Indian mountaineer who was one of the first two individuals to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest. He, along with Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, was a part of the team that took part in John Hunt’s 1953 British Mount Everest Expedition. His feats of climbing bring to mind those of Aleister Crowley, who led the first attempt to climb Kanchenjunga in 1905. While Crowley ultimately had to turn back, Tenzing Norgay Adventures (founded 1978) leads expeditions up Kanchenjunga as one of its trekking adventures in the Himalayas.
