It’s the time of the season
When love runs high
And this time, give it to me easy
And let me try with pleasured hands
“Time of the Season” –The Zombies
“The Summer of Love wasn’t just about love — it was also about sexuality,” says SF State News. “According to Professor and Chair of the Department of Women and Gender Studies Julietta Hua, people were questioning what sexuality could be.”
Birth control started to be reliable and accessible. Young people felt permission to ask questions about sexuality and gender roles. While we’re still asking questions today, and repressive regimes continue to criminalize non-heterosexual love, much recent progress wouldn’t have been possible without the Summer of Love. Many freedoms available to white women still aren’t experienced equally by women of color or poor women.
