Mashable has posted a gallery of early 20th century British tourists capering about the Sphinx, picnicking atop the pyramid constructed for pharoah Khufu, sitting stodgily astride camels being led by grim looking Egyptians. Basically acting like your average imperialists showing blatant disrespect for among some of the most revered monuments on the planet. Those were the days, eh?
Of course among these tourists was a honeymooning Aleister and Rose Crowley who laid enough baksheesh on the locals to get to spend the night in the King’s Chamber of Khufu’s pyramid. Therein he recited the “Bornless One” invocation in order to summon sylphs and amuse his wife, failing in that but activating some clairvoyance in her that eventually led to the reception of Liber AL vel Legis.
Anyway – some amazing pix!
