La Aheba Babalon, the allure of the Scarlet (Haired) Woman

In recent years, Match.com, the online dating site, has celebrated St. Patrick’s day by compiling and publishing statistics that appeared to indicate that scarlet-haired women (since there are statistically more redheads among people of Irish descent than in most other ethnic groups) are more sexually liberated and adventurous than those with other hair colors. It resonates on a superficial level with some popular image of the Thelemic Scarlet Woman – though hair color is not actually a requirement for manifesting this office. It’s also perhaps an amusing echo of this passage:

“Behold! these be grave mysteries; for there are also of my friends who be hermits. Now think not to find them in the forest or on the mountain; but in beds of purple, caressed by magnificent beasts of women with large limbs, and fire and light in their eyes, and masses of flaming hair about them; there shall ye find them.” Liber al vel Legis 2:24

The article goes on to note that there’s no scientific evidence that there are any genetic or other physiological differences in natural redheads that’d account for these behavioral differences and the author posits they may be do to expectations due to popular stereotypes being internalized. There is are no statistics provided for redheaded men for some strange reason.
