Today marks 127 years since Katherine Innes Burton passed away at Boleskine House at the age of 71. Katherine was a remarkable woman whose life took her from studying sculpture in her youth to serving as a nurse alongside Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War. After her passing the house would come under the ownership of her daughter, Mary Rose Hill Burton.
Katherine was laid to rest at Saint John’s Churchyard in Whitebridge, Highland, where this weathered memorial stone marks her grave. Every person who has called Boleskine home has left their mark on its story, and Katherine’s legacy as a woman of courage and service is an important part of that tapestry.
