Witchcraft Theme is Big on Small Screen

A scene from the Motherland teaser showing two young women in an assembly

With The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Charmed, The Magicians, and so on, magic and witchcraft are enjoying a spotlight on television. Now Freeform has announced a witchy addition to prime time, Motherland: Fort Salem, described by Deadline: Hollywood as “an hourlong drama from Claws creator Eliot Laurence and executive producers Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.”

Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, Motherland: Fort Salem follows three young women — two of them played by Taylor Hickson and Jessica Sutton — from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons.

We don’t yet know what to expect or when to expect it, but here’s the teaser followed by a couple of articles about the new series.

  1. OG Charmed was very cliche and Hollywood-y, but still decent. The remake, however, did a 180 and went full on Cultural Marxist with its love diversity (I.e., less White people— in this case, none), so I’ll pass.

Not sure how realistic a series with women on the frot lines of combat will be given the US military’s lowering of standards across the board to get women in combat style positions.
