Machen was a Welsh author and mystic whose writings were popular in the 1890s and early 20th century. The son of a Church of England clergyman, he was fascinated by sensual mysticism and interested in paganism and the occult, influences which show up in his early work. He also studied alchemy, Qabala, and was a close friend of prominent Golden Dawn member (and Crowley nemesis) A. E. Waite.
