One Researcher’s Criteria for the Historicity of Biblical Figures

The Times of Israel ran a story on Lawrence Mykytiuk a researcher who attempts to confirm the historicity of figures mentioned in the Tanakh and New Testament. His criteria are:

  • A name appearing in the must match the name on an inscription on an object, structure or non-Biblical document that has proven authenticity
  • The name in the Bible and on the corroborating inscription must match in terms of setting and time period.
  • There must be matches of three or more specific details identifying an individual

Using these, he believes he’s proven a total of over 50 figures mentioned in the Bible to be actual, historical personages including David, King of Israel.
