Brother James Gordon and Sister Rebecca Doll have just published Mastering Erotic Hypnosis: A Comprehensive Manual for Erotic Play, Fetish, and Kink, focusing on a consent based, non-gendered approach with strong reference to science and history. Writing in clear, accessible language, the authors explain the terminology of hypnosis and spend considerable time discussing the effects of hypnosis and the ethics of consent for erotic activities involving hypnosis. James is a clinical hypnotherapist, while Rebecca holds a master’s degree in education.
For Thelemites, the work may be of interest as it has some passing references to the development and history of hypnosis, shedding light on the divides between the somewhat cult-like systems of hypnosis prevalent in France in the 19th century through the 1930s, including those of Émile Coué , which likely led Crowley to express a dim view of hypnosis, as well as the evolution of the modern, Ericksonian, discipline. The book is comprised of two sections, one about technique and one more focused on erotic play.
The first section provides a detailed guide to technique, including creating a hypnotic modality, understanding suggestibility, induction and deepening. The authors present extensive troubleshooting tips, and wrote the book with the idea in mind that the reader should be trained to hypnotize not only easy “highly suggestible” partners, but should be able to work with nearly anyone who is interested in experiencing erotic hypnotic play.
The second section is a broad discussion of areas of erotic play, including orgasm control and orgasm triggers, as well as how to get the most from mental visualizations and hypnotic roleplay. The discussion of hypnosis for people who are not normally considered “good subjects” is a rare chance for the hobbyist hypnotist to pick up the techniques and disciplines used by professional hypnotists including therapists.
The work is available from Amazon, though the authors will be working through additional distribution outlets soon.
