The Magical Legacy of Johannes Trithemius

The UK’s Scarlet Imprint publishing house released their latest newsletter including news about some upcoming publiciations:

“Phil Legard and Alexander Cummins’ An Excellent Booke of the Arte of Magicke is due from the printer in early February; a slight delay as checks and corrections were made to the transcription following receipt of the colour images of Additional ms. 36674 from the British Library.

“Work is proceeding well on Frater Acher’s Black Abbot · White Magic: Johannes Trithemius and the Angelic Mind. We are delighted that José Gabriel Alegría Sabogal will illuminate the text with his evocative illustrations.

“The book deals with the magical legacy of Johannes Trithemius. The ‘black abbot’ should be considered the central figure in the evolution of the Western esoteric tradition, the character behind many of the legends now attributed to Dr Johann Faust, he was the teacher of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, and a magical role model to John Dee and Paracelsus. New material shines light on Trithemius’ own magical practice, with the translation and analysis of manuscripts attributed to his teacher Pelagius the Hermit of Majorca, and their mysterious intermediary, Libanus Gallus.

“The text includes a biography of Trithemius from leading scholar Professor Klaus Arnold, and concludes with Acher revealing the practical premises that connect Trithemius’ ‘theologica magica’ with the ancient Greek myths aimed at apotheosis: becoming divine.

“The pre-order will open in February.”
